I literally purposefully made a main character in a story with NO indications of gender (a gender-neutral name, no pronouns used except “I,” no extensive physical description, no gendered words like “girlfriend” “brother” etc.) and my professor still responded to my story using “she/her” pronouns to refer to the main character.
